Thröstur Björgvinsson, PhD, ABPP, Bjarne Hansen, PhD, Kristen Hagen, PhD, and Michael Wheaton, PhD, will be conducting a roundtable session titled, “Rapid Gains and Long-Lasting Improvement: State of the Science behind the Bergen 4-Day Treatment” at the 2025 Annual Conference of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) to be held April 3-5, 2025, in Las Vegas, NV.

The Roundtable Abstract is: The Bergen 4-Day Treatment (B4DT) has received tremendous attention worldwide. For instance, in October 2018, Dr. Bjarne Hansen (the developer of B4DT) was selected by Time magazine as one of “The Health Care 50: Fifty People Transforming Health Care in 2018.” This approach builds on five decades of empirical research and theories about the most effective strategies for treating OCD, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Given its concentrated duration and lasting benefits, B4DT has the potential to transform treatment and significantly improve healthcare delivery in the U.S. and other countries where it is implemented. Over 10,000 patients have completed the B4DT in Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Germany, Singapore, and the USA. It is highly effective, with approximately 70% of patients showing meaningful improvement at the 12-month and 4-year follow-ups. The four presenters, who are all international experts in assessing and treating OCD, will describe and discuss the theory and structure of B4DT, the research that led to its development, and the clinical outcome research. Furthermore, the panelists will discuss how (or if) this approach differs from traditional ERP for OCD, including case formulation, the four-day schedule, the treatment techniques implemented, and the rationale behind the treatment approach.
